Wraith Falls
Park County, Wyoming
About This Waterfall
Wraith Falls fans 100 feet across a wide, angled rock face in a broad cascade that shimmers like a white veil draped over the mountainside. Unlike the concentrated plunges found elsewhere in Yellowstone, Wraith Falls spreads thin and wide, creating a lace-like pattern as the water navigates every crack and ledge in the volcanic rock. The surrounding meadow of tall grasses and wildflowers adds a pastoral softness that contrasts with the park's more dramatic canyon scenery.
The trail is an easy 0.9-mile round trip with just 75 feet of elevation gain, crossing open meadow and light forest to a viewing platform at the base of the falls. The flat terrain and short distance make this one of the best family-friendly waterfall hikes in Yellowstone. The meadow along the trail is excellent for wildflower viewing in July, with lupine, Indian paintbrush, and balsamroot coloring the grass.
Visit from June through September for the best trail conditions. The falls thin considerably by late summer but remain photogenic. Early morning or late afternoon light produces the most dramatic shadows across the wide cascade. Combine with a visit to nearby Mammoth Hot Springs terrace for a full day of easy exploration.
