Upper Yellowstone Falls
Park County, Wyoming
About This Waterfall
Upper Yellowstone Falls plunges 109 feet just a quarter mile upstream from its more famous sibling, but the tighter canyon and closer viewpoint make the experience intensely visceral. The river gathers speed through a narrow chute before launching over the brink in a concentrated torrent that smashes into the rocks below with concussive force. The viewpoint sits close enough to feel spray on your face and hear nothing but the roar of falling water.
The Upper Falls Viewpoint is a short 0.2-mile paved walk from the parking area on the North Rim, making this one of the most accessible major waterfalls in Yellowstone. The Brink of the Upper Falls trail descends a series of switchbacks to a platform directly above the plunge point — a thrilling vantage that puts you eye-level with the river as it tips over the edge.
Visit in June for maximum volume when the Yellowstone River runs at peak snowmelt levels. The Upper Falls are often less crowded than the Lower Falls viewpoints despite being equally impressive. Combine with the North Rim trail for a complete canyon experience. Morning light from the east provides the best photography conditions.
