Popo Agie Falls
Fremont County, Wyoming
About This Waterfall
Popo Agie Falls drops 60 feet in the largest of several cascades along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River in Sinks Canyon, where the river famously disappears into a limestone cave before reappearing downstream. The falls tumble through a granite gorge polished smooth by millennia of flow, with deep emerald pools at each level that beckon swimmers on hot summer days. The surrounding canyon of red sandstone and pine forest gives the landscape a distinctly Wyoming character.
The trail follows the river for 1.7 miles one way through Sinks Canyon State Park, passing numerous swimming holes and cascades before reaching the main falls. The route is well-maintained but rocky in places, with several creek crossings that add to the adventure. The swimming holes along the way are some of the best in Wyoming — bring a towel and plan to linger.
July and August offer the warmest water temperatures for swimming, though the falls are most powerful in June during peak runoff. Don't miss the Sinks — the point where the river vanishes underground — and the Rise — where it reappears a quarter mile downstream with more water than it went in with. Free camping is available at the state park campground.
Trail Information
Warning: Creek crossings can be slippery. Swimming holes are unsupervised — use caution. Water is cold from mountain snowmelt. Rattlesnakes are present in the canyon.
