Lower Yellowstone Falls

About This Waterfall

Lower Yellowstone Falls is the undisputed crown jewel of Yellowstone — 308 feet of raw power as the entire Yellowstone River hurls itself over a volcanic ledge into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The canyon walls blaze with sulfur-stained yellows, oranges, and reds that gave the park its name, and the falls punch through this palette like a white fist. At nearly twice the height of Niagara, the scale is staggering, and the thunder of impact echoes off the canyon walls for miles.

Multiple viewpoints line both rims of the canyon. Artist Point on the South Rim offers the classic postcard perspective. Uncle Tom's Trail descends 328 steel steps to a platform partway down the canyon wall for an up-close encounter with the spray. The Brink of the Lower Falls trail on the North Rim leads to a railing directly above the plunge, where you can feel the ground vibrate beneath your feet.

The falls are accessible from May through October, with peak flow typically in June during snowmelt. Uncle Tom's Trail can be crowded — arrive before 8 AM for solitude. Winter access is limited to guided snowcoach tours. Yellowstone park entrance fee of $35 per vehicle applies.
