Sandstone Falls
Summers County, West Virginia
About This Waterfall
Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the New River in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, spanning over 1,500 feet wide with a 25-foot drop across a massive sandstone ledge. The sheer width of this waterfall is staggering — the entire New River pours over the ledge, creating a thundering wall of whitewater that stretches across the full river valley. Islands of rock and vegetation break the falls into multiple channels.
The Sandstone Falls Boardwalk and loop trail covers about 1 mile, with an ADA-accessible boardwalk leading to the main overlook. The trail continues past the boardwalk through farmland and forest to additional viewpoints. Interpretive signs explain the geology and ecology of the area.
The falls are impressive year-round thanks to the New River's consistent flow. Spring flooding can nearly submerge the falls in a massive sheet of churning water. The boardwalk provides easy, safe access for visitors of all abilities. This is unlike any other waterfall in the Appalachians — more like a western river feature transplanted to the mountains.
