Falls of Hills Creek
Pocahontas County, West Virginia
About This Waterfall
Falls of Hills Creek is a series of three waterfalls — 25, 45, and 63 feet — in the Monongahela National Forest, with the lowest being the second-tallest waterfall in West Virginia. The falls descend through a narrow, fern-lined gorge of layered sedimentary rock, each drop revealing new geological layers. The 63-foot lower falls is the star attraction, dropping in a single dramatic plunge into a deep pool.
The 1.4-mile out-and-back trail descends through the gorge, with the first 1,700 feet paved and wheelchair accessible to the upper falls viewpoint. Beyond that, boardwalks and stairways lead past the middle and lower falls. Each waterfall has its own viewing platform with interpretive signs explaining the geology.
The falls run year-round with consistent flow. The 114-acre preserve sits along the Highland Scenic Highway, one of West Virginia's most scenic drives. Fall color in early October is spectacular, and winter ice formations on all three falls create dramatic frozen displays.
