Cathedral Falls

About This Waterfall

Cathedral Falls is a dramatic 60-foot waterfall where water plunges over layered sandstone and shale cliffs visible from Route 60 near Gauley Bridge. The falls are named for the cathedral-like rock formations that frame the cascade, with overhanging ledges and concave walls that create a natural amphitheater. The layered geology is beautifully exposed in the cliff face.

The falls are visible from the roadside with a designated parking area, making this one of the most accessible waterfalls in West Virginia. A short scramble from the parking area leads to the base of the falls for a closer look. The rock formations around the falls display millions of years of geological history.

The falls are seasonal and run best during spring and after significant rain. The roadside location makes this an easy stop on a scenic drive along the Midland Trail (US-60). Combined with nearby Kanawha Falls, this area offers two impressive waterfalls in close proximity.
