Blackwater Falls

Blackwater Falls is a 62-foot waterfall where the Blackwater River plunges over a broad sandstone ledge, its water stained a distinctive amber-black color by tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles in the surrounding forest. The dark water against the pale sandstone creates a striking visual contrast. The falls are set in a deep canyon surrounded by dense Appalachian forest.

A boardwalk and 214 wooden steps lead from the parking area to a viewing platform near the base of the falls. The descent is manageable for most visitors, though the return climb requires moderate effort. The state park surrounding the falls offers 20 miles of trails, a lodge, and extensive recreation facilities.

The falls run year-round and are spectacular in every season — spring floods, summer greenery, fall foliage, and winter ice. The canyon creates its own microclimate that can be significantly cooler than the surrounding area. This is West Virginia's most iconic waterfall and a cornerstone of the state's Waterfall Trail.
