Lower Lewis River Falls
Skamania County, Washington
About This Waterfall
Lower Lewis River Falls is a 43-foot wide curtain of water where the entire Lewis River drops over a broad basalt ledge into a turquoise pool, stretching 200 feet across during high flow. The falls are wider than they are tall, creating a panoramic wall of white water that can be viewed from multiple angles along the forested riverbank. The plunge pool below is one of the best swimming holes in southern Washington, with deep, clear water that glows an almost tropical blue-green against the dark basalt.
The viewpoint is just a few hundred feet from the parking area, making Lower Lewis Falls one of the easiest waterfalls to access in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. For those wanting more, the 8.4-mile Lewis River Falls Trail continues upstream past Middle Lewis River Falls and Upper Lewis River Falls, following the river through old-growth forest with several swimming opportunities along the way. The trail gains 1,230 feet over its full length with a moderate grade throughout.
Located 26 miles east of the town of Cougar along Forest Road 90, the Lewis River Recreation Area is a hidden gem that sees far fewer visitors than the more famous Cascade waterfalls. Peak flow in late spring is impressive, while summer offers warm temperatures for swimming. A recreation permit is required June 15 through September 15 at all three waterfall trailheads.
