Comet Falls
Pierce County, Washington
About This Waterfall
Comet Falls is a spectacular 320-foot plunge on Van Trump Creek, one of the tallest and most dramatic waterfalls in Mount Rainier National Park. The water drops in a single unbroken column from a notch in the cliff, fanning slightly as it descends through a mist-filled amphitheater of dark volcanic rock. On clear days, the upper reaches of Mount Rainier loom above the treeline behind the falls, creating a scene of almost impossible grandeur — a towering waterfall backed by a towering volcano.
The 3.2-mile round-trip trail climbs steeply through old-growth forest, gaining 1,400 feet to reach the base of the falls. The first mile passes smaller cascades on Van Trump Creek before the trail steepens through a series of switchbacks. The final approach opens into the spray zone at the base, where the mist keeps the surrounding rocks perpetually wet and the air cool even on warm summer days. The trail continues above the falls to Van Trump Park's subalpine meadows for those wanting more.
The trailhead is accessible from late June through October, depending on snowpack. The Comet Falls Trail is one of the most popular day hikes in the park, so arrive early on summer weekends. The steep, rocky trail can be challenging — wear sturdy boots with good traction. National park entrance fee required.
