White Oak Canyon Falls
Madison County, Virginia
About This Waterfall
White Oak Canyon contains a series of six waterfalls ranging from 35 to 86 feet in Shenandoah National Park, making it arguably the finest waterfall hiking destination in Virginia. The largest falls drop 86 feet over a greenstone ledge into a deep swimming hole. Each successive waterfall has its own character, from broad cascades to narrow plunges, connected by a trail that follows the creek through a hemlock-lined gorge.
The full out-and-back hike to all six falls covers about 9.4 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation change, making it a full-day adventure. Most visitors hike to the first two or three falls for a 4-6 mile round trip. Swimming holes at the base of several falls provide refreshing stops on hot summer days. The trail follows the scenic White Oak Run.
Spring offers peak water flow and wildflowers, while October brings vibrant fall color. Summer swimming is popular at the larger pools. This trail can be combined with the Cedar Run Trail for a challenging but spectacular loop through two waterfall-filled canyons.
