Overall Run Falls
Warren County, Virginia
About This Waterfall
Overall Run Falls is the tallest waterfall in Shenandoah National Park at 93 feet, where Overall Run plunges off a cliff face into a narrow, rocky gorge. The falls are at their most dramatic after heavy rain, when the seasonal stream transforms into a powerful column of water against the dark cliff. The remote location means fewer visitors compared to the park's more accessible falls.
The 5.1-mile round-trip hike from Mathews Arm Campground involves moderate to strenuous effort with 1,291 feet of elevation gain. An alternative shorter approach starts from the Hogback Overlook parking area at milepost 21.1 on Skyline Drive via the Tuscarora-Overall Run Trail. Both routes offer excellent views of the Shenandoah Valley.
Visit after heavy rain for the best flow — Overall Run can be dry during extended dry spells. Spring and fall offer the best combination of water flow and scenery. The more adventurous hike and variable water flow mean this falls rewards planning and effort.
