Dark Hollow Falls
Madison County, Virginia
About This Waterfall
Dark Hollow Falls is a classic 70-foot stairstepping waterfall in Shenandoah National Park where Hogcamp Branch cascades down a series of moss-covered rock ledges in a narrow, shaded ravine. The water tumbles over dark greenstone rock in multiple tiers, each creating small pools that catch light filtering through the forest canopy. The intimate gorge setting makes this one of the most atmospheric waterfalls in the park.
The 1.4-mile round-trip trail from Skyline Drive is one of the shortest and most popular waterfall hikes in Shenandoah. The path descends steeply through a hemlock and oak forest to viewing platforms at the base of the falls. The return climb is the most challenging part of this otherwise short hike.
The falls run best during spring and after rain. Fall color in mid-October transforms the surrounding forest. The trail is extremely popular — arrive early or visit on weekdays to avoid crowds. An entrance fee or America the Beautiful pass is required for Shenandoah National Park.
