Crabtree Falls
Nelson County, Virginia
About This Waterfall
Crabtree Falls is a series of five major cascading waterfalls on Crabtree Creek in Nelson County, Virginia, with a total vertical drop of approximately 1,200 feet — the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Each of the five tiers offers its own distinct character, from delicate slides to powerful plunges, connected by a well-built trail with overlooks at each level. The scale of this waterfall system is truly breathtaking.
The 3-mile out-and-back trail climbs through mixed hardwood forest with a 1,100-foot elevation gain. A short wheelchair-accessible paved section leads to the first overlook, while steeper switchbacks with stairs and guardrails continue to the upper cascades. Multiple viewing platforms at different elevations provide varied perspectives.
Spring snowmelt and rain produce the most dramatic flow, though the falls run year-round. Fall foliage in mid-October is outstanding. Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 27, this is one of Virginia's most popular hiking destinations. Despite safety improvements, stay on the trail — over 20 deaths have occurred from visitors leaving the marked path.
