Gorman Falls

About This Waterfall

Gorman Falls is a 65-foot travertine waterfall in Colorado Bend State Park, one of the most extraordinary natural formations in Texas. Unlike most waterfalls that erode their surroundings, Gorman Falls is actively building itself — mineral-laden spring water deposits layers of calcium carbonate (travertine) as it cascades down the cliff face, creating a living sculpture of dripping, moss-covered formations that look like something from a tropical rainforest. The bright green moss, maidenhair ferns, and columbine that cover the travertine create a lush oasis in the otherwise arid Texas Hill Country.

The Gorman Falls Trail is a 2.6-mile round trip that crosses mostly flat terrain through typical Hill Country scrubland before descending steeply to the falls at the end. The final descent to the viewing area involves rocky, sometimes slippery terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential. The trail is open daily but accessed by self-guided hiking only — no guided tours are currently offered. A day-use reservation through the Texas State Parks reservation system is required.

The falls flow year-round thanks to the spring-fed water source, but flow varies with rainfall. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking temperatures — summer in central Texas is brutally hot, and the trail has little shade. The park also offers excellent birdwatching, cave tours, and Colorado River access. Located about two hours northwest of Austin, Gorman Falls is well worth the drive for anyone seeking an unexpected tropical waterfall in the heart of Texas.
