Virgin Falls

Virgin Falls is one of the most extraordinary waterfalls in the eastern United States — a 110-foot cascade that emerges from a cave, plunges over a cliff face, and then disappears into another cave at the base, never seeing the light of day again. This hydrological phenomenon occurs on the Cumberland Plateau where underground streams briefly surface along the escarpment edge.

The 8-mile round-trip trail traverses rugged Cumberland Plateau terrain, descending about 900 feet along a rocky path. Along the way, hikers pass Big Laurel Falls, Sheep Cave Falls, and Big Branch Falls before reaching Virgin Falls at the turnaround point.

The falls are most impressive during winter and spring when rainfall is highest. The remote setting and challenging trail keep crowds manageable. This is a destination for experienced hikers who appreciate wild, unspoiled natural areas.
