Ramsey Cascades

About This Waterfall

Ramsey Cascades is the tallest waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 100 feet, where Ramsey Prong crashes over a massive jumble of rocks and boulders in a spectacular multi-tiered display. The falls fan out across a wide rock face, and the surrounding old-growth forest includes some of the largest trees in the eastern United States.

The 8-mile round-trip trail is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Smokies, gaining over 2,100 feet of elevation. The first two miles follow an old logging road, then the trail enters a magnificent stand of virgin hardwood forest with ancient tulip poplars and yellow birches.

Visit in spring for dramatic water flow and wildflowers, or in October when the old-growth canopy explodes with color. The trail can be muddy and stream crossings challenging after rain. Start early to complete this strenuous hike with daylight to spare.
