Grotto Falls
Sevier County, Tennessee
About This Waterfall
Grotto Falls is the only waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park that you can walk behind, making it one of the most unique waterfall experiences in the Southeast. The 25-foot cascade pours over a rock overhang, creating a natural grotto behind the curtain of water. Stepping behind the falls offers a surreal perspective as water streams past in a translucent curtain.
The 2.6-mile round-trip Trillium Gap Trail winds through one of the finest old-growth forests in the park. You may encounter the park's llama supply train heading to LeConte Lodge — a uniquely Smokies experience. Dense rhododendron tunnels bloom in June along the trail.
Spring wildflowers are exceptional, including large displays of trillium. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail that provides access is closed December through mid-March. Arrive early on weekends as the trailhead lot is small.
