Fall Creek Falls
Van Buren County, Tennessee
About This Waterfall
Fall Creek Falls is one of the tallest free-fall waterfalls in the eastern United States, plunging 256 feet into a massive plunge pool carved from ancient sandstone. The sheer vertical drop sends a column of water crashing into a deep gorge surrounded by towering cliff walls draped in ferns and mosses. On sunny days, rainbows dance in the perpetual mist at the base of the falls.
The falls can be viewed from an overlook at the rim of the gorge, or more adventurous hikers can descend a steep, cable-assisted trail to the plunge basin below. The state park surrounding the falls contains several additional waterfalls including Cane Creek Falls, Cane Creek Cascades, and Piney Creek Falls, making it possible to see multiple impressive waterfalls in a single visit.
Spring rains produce the most dramatic flow, transforming the falls into a thundering column of water. The park is also spectacular during fall foliage season in late October. This is one of Tennessee's crown jewels and a must-visit destination for waterfall enthusiasts in the Southeast.
