Burgess Falls
Putnam County, Tennessee
About This Waterfall
Burgess Falls is a stunning 136-foot waterfall on the Falling Water River that serves as the centerpiece of Burgess Falls State Park. The river drops through four cascading waterfalls along the trail, building in drama until the grand finale — the main falls plunging into a turquoise pool in a deep gorge. The layered limestone and sandstone geology creates natural ledges and terraces.
The 1.5-mile trail follows the river downstream, passing each cascade with overlooks and platforms providing safe viewing. The trail terminates at a dramatic overlook of the main 136-foot plunge against the layered cliff walls of the gorge.
The falls are impressive year-round thanks to consistent water flow. Fall color in late October adds beauty to the gorge setting. This is one of the most family-friendly waterfall hikes in Tennessee with well-maintained trails and clear signage.
