Harrison Wright Falls
Luzerne County, Pennsylvania
About This Waterfall
Harrison Wright Falls is a 27-foot plunge waterfall in Ricketts Glen State Park that is widely considered the most photogenic waterfall in Pennsylvania. The falls drop into a perfectly circular pool surrounded by massive boulders of red Catskill Formation sandstone, creating a natural amphitheater that catches light beautifully in the morning hours. The warm reddish-brown hue of the sandstone, combined with the dark hemlock canopy above and the emerald pool below, makes this waterfall a magnet for photographers.
Harrison Wright Falls is located at Waters Meet, the confluence of Kitchen Creek's two branches, roughly 1.5 miles into the Falls Trail from the Lake Rose trailhead. It can be reached via either the Ganoga Glen or Glen Leigh branch of the trail. The approach from Glen Leigh passes the impressive 36-foot Sheldon Reynolds Falls just upstream. The trail to this point involves stone staircases and moderate elevation change but is manageable for reasonably fit hikers.
The falls are best photographed in the morning when light filters into the gorge from the east. Spring offers the strongest water flow, while fall foliage season adds spectacular color. Many visitors make Harrison Wright Falls the focal point of a shorter loop using the Highland Trail connector, covering about 3.2 miles total. This shorter loop captures the most dramatic waterfalls without committing to the full 7.2-mile circuit.
