Buttermilk Falls
Carbon County, Pennsylvania
About This Waterfall
Buttermilk Falls in the Lehigh Gorge is a beautiful 45-foot cascade that tumbles over moss-covered rocks in a dense hemlock forest along the Lehigh River. The falls fan out across a wide rock face, creating the frothy, milky appearance that gives them their name. The surrounding forest of old-growth hemlocks creates deep shade that keeps the gorge cool and lush, with thick carpets of moss and ferns covering the rocks and fallen logs. The intimate, grotto-like setting feels like stepping back in time.
The trail to the falls is a short 0.4-mile walk from the parking area on a well-maintained path through the forest. The approach is relatively flat with only gentle grades, making it one of the more accessible waterfall hikes in eastern Pennsylvania. A viewing area at the base of the falls provides a clear view of the full cascade. For those seeking more adventure, the Lehigh Gorge Trail — a paved rail-trail — runs nearby, offering miles of hiking and biking along the river.
Spring snowmelt and rainstorms produce the best water flow. Summer brings lush greenery and cool shade in the gorge. Fall foliage transforms the surrounding forest, and the falls are especially photogenic with colorful leaves scattered on the rocks. The falls are located near Jim Thorpe, a charming Victorian-era town with shops, restaurants, and the famous Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, making for an excellent day trip.
