Watson Falls
Douglas County, Oregon
About This Waterfall
Watson Falls thunders 272 feet down a cathedral-like amphitheater of dark basalt, making it the third-tallest waterfall in Oregon. The falls crash through a notch in the cliff and spray outward as they descend, filling the forest bowl with a constant mist that nourishes carpets of moss and ferns clinging to every surface. On sunny days, rainbows dance in the spray at the base, rewarding hikers who make the short climb to the viewpoint.
The 0.9-mile round-trip trail climbs 433 feet through old-growth Douglas fir and western hemlock, crossing a footbridge over Watson Creek before switchbacking up to a misty viewpoint at the base of the falls. The trail is steep in places with exposed roots and rocks, earning its moderate rating despite the short distance. A spur trail leads to a closer vantage point where the spray soaks everything within reach.
Located just two miles east of Toketee Falls along Forest Road 37, Watson Falls pairs perfectly with its more famous neighbor for a half-day waterfall excursion. Spring snowmelt produces the most dramatic flow, but the falls run year-round. The trailhead has limited parking and no restrooms.
