Tumalo Falls
Deschutes County, Oregon
About This Waterfall
Tumalo Falls is a 97-foot plunge on Tumalo Creek that serves as the gateway waterfall to Central Oregon's high desert-meets-Cascades landscape. The falls drop over a wide basalt ledge into a rocky canyon framed by ponderosa pine and mountain hemlock, with the snowcapped peaks of the Cascades visible through gaps in the canopy. In winter, massive ice formations build around the falls, transforming it into a frozen palace that attracts photographers from across the state.
The main viewpoint is just steps from the parking lot, making Tumalo one of the most accessible waterfalls near Bend. For hikers, a 6.4-mile out-and-back trail follows Tumalo Creek upstream past half a dozen smaller named waterfalls, or a 7.4-mile loop visits the same falls plus connects through higher-elevation terrain with views of Broken Top and South Sister. The trail gains roughly 557 feet over rolling terrain through mixed conifer forest.
Located just 14 miles from downtown Bend, Tumalo Falls is the city's most popular waterfall and crowded on summer weekends — arrive before 10 AM to secure parking. The access road (Forest Road 4603) is gated in winter but accessible by snowshoe or cross-country ski. A Northwest Forest Pass or day-use fee is required year-round.
