Koosah Falls
Linn County, Oregon
About This Waterfall
Koosah Falls is a 70-foot block waterfall where the entire McKenzie River drops over a broad basalt shelf into a deep, emerald pool framed by towering walls of dark columnar basalt. The falls are wider than they are tall, creating a curtain of white water that spans the full width of the river channel. Beneath the main drop, springs burst from the basalt walls at multiple points, feeding crystal-clear side streams that merge with the turquoise pool below.
Located just a half mile downstream from Sahalie Falls, Koosah is connected by the same easy 2.6-mile loop trail that follows both banks of the McKenzie River through old-growth forest. The viewpoint is accessed via a short spur trail with stairs descending to a platform overlooking the falls. The combined Sahalie-Koosah loop is one of the best two-for-one waterfall hikes in Oregon, delivering two dramatically different falls in under two miles.
The McKenzie's glacial source keeps the falls running strong year-round, though late spring through early summer brings the most impressive volume. The deep blue-green color of the water — fed by snowmelt percolating through volcanic rock — is most vivid on overcast days. A Northwest Forest Pass or day-use fee is required at the parking area.
