Abiqua Falls
Marion County, Oregon
About This Waterfall
Abiqua Falls is a near-perfect 92-foot free-fall that plunges into a massive amphitheater of columnar basalt curving around the plunge pool like the inside of a cathedral dome. The hexagonal basalt columns — some of Oregon's finest — rise in towering walls on three sides, their geometric precision contrasting beautifully with the wild spray of the falls. On sunny mornings, light penetrates the bowl and illuminates the mist in golden shafts that make this place feel genuinely sacred.
The trail is short — roughly 0.7 miles from the nearest trailhead — but the approach is the real challenge. A rutted, rocky dirt road requires high-clearance vehicles (4WD recommended), and without one, hikers must add an extra mile or more of road walking each way. The final descent into the canyon involves scrambling down a steep, muddy slope with the aid of ropes anchored to trees. This is not a maintained trail, and conditions vary dramatically with weather.
Visit on a weekday in late spring for the best combination of water flow and solitude. The road is often impassable in winter. Despite the rugged access, Abiqua rewards those who make the effort with one of the most dramatic natural amphitheaters in Oregon. Swimming in the plunge pool is possible in summer but the water is cold.
