Yellowstone Falls
Haywood County, North Carolina
About This Waterfall
Yellowstone Falls is the most impressive of the three waterfalls in the Graveyard Fields area along the Blue Ridge Parkway, dropping approximately 55 feet over a dark rock face into a narrow gorge. The tannin-stained water gives the falls and surrounding rocks a distinctive amber hue reminiscent of its famous namesake. The remote setting at over 5,000 feet elevation gives this waterfall a wild, untamed character.
Unlike the easily accessible Second Falls and Upper Falls in Graveyard Fields, reaching Yellowstone Falls requires venturing off the main loop trail on a steep, unofficial path that descends sharply through rhododendron thickets. The descent involves holding onto roots and rocks, and should only be attempted by experienced hikers comfortable with off-trail scrambling.
The high elevation means the surrounding forest is a mix of spruce, fir, and northern hardwoods that create brilliant fall color in early October. Blueberry bushes along the main trail produce fruit in late summer. Visit after heavy rain for the best flow. This is a rewarding destination for adventurous hikers seeking solitude away from the crowds at Graveyard Fields.
