Setrock Creek Falls

About This Waterfall

Setrock Creek Falls is a lovely 75-foot cascade along the Black Mountain Crest Trail near Mount Mitchell, where Setrock Creek drops through a series of stepped ledges surrounded by a rich forest of hardwoods and rhododendron. The falls are tucked away from the main tourist routes, offering a peaceful alternative to the more crowded waterfalls in the region. Each tier of the cascade creates small pools that catch the light beautifully.

The trail to the falls branches off from the popular South Toe River Trail and follows Setrock Creek uphill through a dense canopy. The moderate hike rewards visitors with solitude and a pristine forest setting. The surrounding area is part of the Pisgah National Forest and features some of the highest peaks in the eastern United States.

Spring and early summer bring the best water flow. The high elevation means fall color arrives early, typically in early October. The proximity to Mount Mitchell State Park makes this an excellent addition to a day exploring the highest point east of the Mississippi. Bring layers, as temperatures at this elevation can be 15 degrees cooler than the valleys.
