Second Falls at Graveyard Fields
Haywood County, North Carolina
About This Waterfall
Second Falls is a beautiful 55-foot cascade at Graveyard Fields along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the Yellowstone Prong tumbles over a series of dark rock ledges into a scenic mountain pool. The falls are framed by a high-elevation forest of birch, spruce, and mountain ash that gives the area an almost northern feel. The tannin-stained water creates an amber glow against the dark rock.
A short, well-maintained trail leads from the Graveyard Fields parking area to a wooden observation platform overlooking the falls. The trail crosses a boardwalk through the open meadow before entering the forest and descending to the viewing area. At over 5,000 feet elevation, the air is noticeably cooler here than in the valleys below.
The high-altitude meadow surrounding the trail is famous for its wild blueberry bushes that fruit in late July and August. Fall color arrives early at this elevation, typically peaking in early to mid-October. Winter ice formations on the falls create striking photo opportunities. Arrive early on weekends as the small Parkway parking area fills quickly.
