Roaring Fork Falls Trailhead

This scenic cascade drops approximately 30 feet over moss-covered granite ledges, creating a beautiful multi-tiered display as water tumbles through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The waterfall's stepped formation allows water to pool briefly at each level before continuing its descent, creating natural viewing spots and photo opportunities.

The trail follows an old logging road before transitioning to a narrower forest path that winds through dense hardwood and rhododendron forests typical of the Appalachian region. The moderately challenging hike covers 2.2 miles round-trip with steady but manageable elevation gain. Creek crossings and rocky terrain require sturdy hiking boots, especially during wet conditions, and the final approach involves some scrambling over boulders and roots.

Visit during spring months for peak water flow when mountain snowmelt and seasonal rains create the most dramatic display. Early morning visits offer the best lighting for photography and fewer crowds. Allow extra time to explore the pool area below the falls, where you can often spot salamanders and other wildlife in the clear mountain water.
