Rainbow Falls

About This Waterfall

This spectacular 150-foot plunge waterfall creates one of the most dramatic displays in the Pisgah National Forest, with water thundering down a sheer granite cliff face. The powerful cascade generates a misty spray that often produces brilliant rainbow displays on sunny days, especially during morning hours when light filters through the forest canopy. The impressive volume and consistent year-round flow make this one of Western North Carolina's most reliable waterfall destinations.

The trail begins on an old logging road before narrowing into a well-maintained forest path through dense hardwood and rhododendron groves. Hikers will encounter several stream crossings and rocky sections, with the final approach involving a steep descent to reach the base viewing area. The moderate terrain includes some elevation changes but remains accessible to families with older children and most fitness levels.

Plan your visit during spring months when snowmelt creates the most impressive water volume, though the falls maintain good flow throughout the year. Arrive early on weekends to secure parking along the forest road, as the small pullout area fills quickly. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction, as rocks near the falls can be slippery from constant mist.
