Looking Glass Falls

Looking Glass Falls is one of western North Carolina's most beloved and accessible waterfalls, plunging 60 feet over a broad granite face into a cool pool below. The wide curtain of water crashes over a smooth rock ledge framed by lush rhododendron and hemlock, creating a scene that draws thousands of visitors each year. Even in drier months, the falls maintain a respectable flow fed by Looking Glass Creek.

The experience here is uniquely effortless. A short flight of stone steps leads from the roadside pullout down to the base of the falls, where mist hangs in the air and the roar of water echoes off the surrounding rock walls. There is no trail to speak of — just a quick descent to one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the southern Appalachians.

Visit after a good rain for the most dramatic flow, or come in October when the surrounding hardwoods blaze with color against the dark rock face. Summer weekends draw large crowds, so arrive early for the best parking. The falls face north, making overcast days ideal for photography without harsh shadows.
