High Shoals Falls
North Carolina
About This Waterfall
This spectacular 80-foot waterfall cascades dramatically over a granite cliff face, creating one of the most impressive displays in South Mountains State Park. The falls plunge into a deep pool surrounded by towering granite walls, forming a natural amphitheater that amplifies the thunderous sound of rushing water.
The well-maintained trail follows Jacob Fork Creek through diverse ecosystems including mountain laurel thickets and hardwood forests. Multiple wooden bridges cross the creek while gentle switchbacks manage the 300-foot elevation gain, making this hike accessible for families with older children. Several smaller cascades along the route build anticipation for the main attraction.
Spring visits offer the most dramatic water flow from seasonal rains and snowmelt, while fall provides stunning foliage against the granite backdrop. Weekday visits help avoid crowds, and sturdy footwear is essential for potentially slippery rocks near the falls. The state park offers excellent amenities including restrooms, picnic areas, and camping facilities.
