Cullasaja Falls
North Carolina
About This Waterfall
This impressive 250-foot cascade plunges down a sheer granite cliff face along the scenic Cullasaja River gorge, offering one of the most dramatic roadside waterfall experiences in Western North Carolina. Located directly along US Highway 64 between Franklin and Highlands, the falls provide an easily accessible natural spectacle that draws photographers and nature lovers alike. The powerful water display varies dramatically with seasonal conditions, transforming from a gentle veil during dry periods to a thunderous torrent after heavy rains or spring snowmelt.
A short but steep trail descends from the roadside pullout to multiple viewing platforms positioned at different elevations, allowing visitors to experience the falls from various perspectives. The rocky terrain requires sturdy footwear, and the mist-dampened surfaces can be extremely slippery. The trail involves some scrambling over rocks and can be challenging for those with mobility issues.
Early morning visits offer the best lighting conditions and smaller crowds, while the cool spray provides welcome relief during summer heat. Exercise extreme caution near the water's edge, as the combination of wet rocks and swift currents creates hazardous conditions. Spring and early summer provide the most spectacular water flow, though the falls remain impressive year-round.
