Catawba Falls
McDowell County, North Carolina
About This Waterfall
Catawba Falls is a magnificent series of cascades on the headwaters of the Catawba River, with the lower falls dropping approximately 100 feet over a wide granite face surrounded by dense forest. The newly rebuilt trail features modern staircases, overlooks, and an observation tower that provide safe access to both the lower and upper falls. The upper falls add another 80 feet of dramatic cascading water.
The 1.1-mile River Trail follows the Catawba River upstream through a lush forest of hemlock, rhododendron, and hardwoods. Multiple creek crossings on well-built bridges add to the charm. The trail underwent a major two-year reconstruction that reopened in 2024, transforming what was once a rough scramble into a well-designed hiking experience with proper infrastructure.
Spring runoff produces the most impressive flow, while fall brings vibrant color to the surrounding forest. The trail is well-shaded and pleasant even on warm summer days. The combination of easy access, dramatic scenery, and modern trail improvements makes Catawba Falls one of the best waterfall hikes near Asheville.
