Niagara Falls
Niagara County, New York
About This Waterfall
Niagara Falls needs no introduction — it is the most powerful waterfall in North America and one of the most famous natural wonders on Earth. The American Falls drops 180 feet over a wide ledge of dolomite limestone, while the adjacent Bridal Veil Falls, separated by tiny Luna Island, adds a delicate 181-foot cascade. Together with the massive Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, the complex carries roughly 750,000 gallons of water per second. The sheer volume of water creates a perpetual mist cloud visible for miles and a roar that can be heard throughout the surrounding parks.
From the American side, Niagara Falls State Park — the oldest state park in the United States, established in 1885 — offers multiple ways to experience the falls. The Cave of the Winds tour on Goat Island takes visitors to the Hurricane Deck, just 20 feet from the base of Bridal Veil Falls. The 1.9-mile Goat Island Scenic Walk loops around the island with dramatic viewpoints, and the 230-foot Observation Tower provides the only American vantage point to see both the American and Horseshoe Falls simultaneously.
The falls are magnificent year-round. Summer brings the iconic Maid of the Mist boat tours and peak tourist season. Winter transforms the surrounding gorge into a frozen landscape, with ice bridges forming in the basin below. Spring offers peak water flow. Evening illumination lights the falls in changing colors. Allow at least half a day to explore the American side thoroughly.
