Lucifer Falls
Tompkins County, New York
About This Waterfall
Lucifer Falls drops 115 feet through a narrow, winding gorge in Robert H. Treman State Park, one of the crown jewels of Ithaca's gorge trail system. The falls split and recombine as they tumble over layered shelves of dark shale, creating an intricate, lace-like pattern of cascading water framed by towering hemlock trees and fern-covered walls. The name evokes the Latin meaning of "light-bearer," and on sunny mornings, shafts of light illuminate the mist rising from the gorge floor.
The Gorge Trail begins in the upper portion of the park and descends through a quarter-mile narrow rocky section past Lucifer Falls, continuing into the wider, more wooded lower gorge. The trail passes 12 waterfalls total, with three significant staircases along the route. A stone overlook platform provides the classic elevated view of Lucifer Falls, while the lower trail offers intimate views from the gorge floor. The full loop via the Rim Trail is approximately 4.6 miles.
The falls are at their most dramatic in spring when snowmelt swells the creek, though they run year-round. Fall foliage turns the gorge into a cathedral of color. The lower park features a stone-lined swimming pool fed by the creek, open in summer. Camping is available in the park, and the trailhead is just 5 miles from downtown Ithaca.
