High Falls
Monroe County, New York
About This Waterfall
High Falls is a striking 96-foot urban waterfall on the Genesee River in the heart of downtown Rochester, where the river plunges over a wide ledge of Lockport Dolostone into a churning basin surrounded by 19th-century industrial architecture. The falls powered Rochester's earliest flour mills and earned the city its "Flour City" nickname. Today, the surrounding Brown's Race Historic District preserves the footprint of this industrial heritage, with the falls as the dramatic centerpiece.
The best views come from the Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge, which spans the gorge just downstream and provides a head-on perspective of the full width of the falls. Additional viewing platforms in High Falls Terrace Park and the rooftop of the Genesee Brew House offer different angles. The Brewery Line Trail along the east bank leads to a viewing platform overlooking the falls from river level. No true hiking is required — all viewpoints are within a short walk of street-level parking.
The falls are impressive year-round, with spring offering the highest water volume. Winter ice formations along the gorge walls add dramatic texture. The surrounding neighborhood features restaurants, the Genesee Brew House, and several art galleries, making High Falls an easy addition to a Rochester visit. Evening visits offer atmospheric lighting from the surrounding cityscape.
