Buttermilk Falls
Tompkins County, New York
About This Waterfall
Buttermilk Falls cascades 165 feet down a steeply angled wall of striated Devonian shale in the heart of Ithaca's gorge country. The water fans out across the layered rock face, creating the creamy, frothy appearance that gives the falls their name. At the base sits a popular swimming hole fed by the cool waters of Buttermilk Creek, one of the most refreshing natural swimming spots in the Finger Lakes region.
The Gorge Trail climbs steeply alongside the main falls and continues upstream past a series of smaller cascades, pools, and rock formations over roughly 1.5 miles. The trail is rugged with stone steps and uneven footing, gaining about 500 feet of elevation as it winds through a narrow gorge lined with moss-covered walls and overhanging hemlocks. At the top, the trail connects to Treman Lake and the Rim Trail for a loop return.
Summer is the prime season, when the swimming area at the base is open and lifeguards are on duty. The gorge is stunning during fall foliage, with maples and oaks turning brilliant orange and red above the grey shale walls. The Gorge Trail is open May through November. The park offers tent and RV camping, making it a great base for exploring Ithaca's many waterfalls.
