Buttermilk Falls
Sussex County, New Jersey
About This Waterfall
Buttermilk Falls is the tallest waterfall in New Jersey, a narrow ribbon cascade that drops approximately 200 feet over multiple tiers of layered rock in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The falls are fed by a small mountain stream that threads its way down a steep, hemlock-shaded ravine, creating a delicate yet persistent cascade that is at its most impressive during spring snowmelt. The multiple tiers create a staircase effect as the water bounces from ledge to ledge, with each tier separated by small pools and slides.
The Buttermilk Falls Trail begins at the base of the falls on Mountain Road and climbs steeply alongside the cascade. The trail is 1.4 miles one way with an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet, making it one of the more challenging waterfall hikes in the region. The steep sections begin immediately from the trailhead and continue relentlessly upward. The effort is rewarded with dramatic views of the falls from various elevations, and the trail connects to longer routes at the top.
Spring snowmelt in March and April creates the most impressive flow. Summer brings lower water but lush green foliage in the ravine. Fall foliage adds spectacular color to the hemlock and hardwood forest. Note that Mountain Road (the access road to the trailhead) is closed to vehicles from January through mid-April and may be closed due to construction — check the NPS website for current conditions. The falls are free to visit with no entrance fee.
