Flume Gorge
Grafton County, New Hampshire
About This Waterfall
Flume Gorge is a spectacular 800-foot-long natural gorge at the base of Mount Liberty in Franconia Notch State Park, where granite walls rise 70 to 90 feet on either side of a narrow channel carved by Flume Brook. The highlight is Avalanche Falls, a 45-foot cascade at the head of the gorge, but the entire experience — walking along wooden boardwalks through the narrow chasm with moss and fern-covered walls towering above — is unforgettable. The gorge was discovered in 1808 and has been drawing tourists ever since, making it one of New Hampshire's oldest and most beloved natural attractions.
The Flume Trail is a 2-mile loop that begins at the visitor center and follows a well-maintained path of boardwalks, stairs, and bridges through the gorge and surrounding forest. Along the way, hikers encounter covered bridges, giant glacial boulders, mountain pools, and the 40-foot Sentinel Pine Bridge spanning a deep pool. The trail is accessible to most fitness levels, though there are stairs throughout. The visitor center offers exhibits, a cafe, and a gift shop.
The gorge is open from mid-May through late October, and the entrance fee includes access to the visitor center. Summer is the busiest season — visit in the morning or on weekdays for a more peaceful experience. Fall foliage in Franconia Notch is legendary, and the gorge takes on a magical quality when autumn colors are reflected in the dark pools below.
