Hunter Creek Falls

About This Waterfall

Hunter Creek Falls is a 35-foot waterfall tucked into a canyon in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, just minutes from downtown Reno. The waterfall plunges over a rocky ledge into a small pool surrounded by willows and aspens that turn golden in autumn. For a waterfall this close to a major city, the setting feels remarkably wild — the narrow canyon walls block out views of the urban sprawl below, and the sound of rushing water replaces the noise of the city. It's a genuine escape from civilization that requires only a moderate hike.

The Hunter Creek Trail covers 5.8 miles round trip with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain through high desert terrain that transitions to a forested creekside environment as you approach the falls. The trail starts in sun-exposed sagebrush country with panoramic views of the Reno skyline and the Sierra Nevada, then gradually enters more forested terrain following Hunter Creek upstream. Several long sun-exposed stretches mean bringing plenty of sunscreen and water is essential. The trail is well-marked and suitable for families.

April through October is the best time to hike, with peak waterfall flow from April through June during snowmelt. The falls run year-round but diminish in late summer. The trailhead has a parking area and restrooms. This is one of the most popular hiking trails in the Reno area, so weekends can be busy. The autumn aspen colors along the creek make September and October particularly scenic, though the falls will be running low.
