Ousel Falls
Gallatin County, Montana
About This Waterfall
Ousel Falls cascades 100 feet through a narrow, mossy gorge in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky, the water splitting and recombining as it navigates the rocky channel in a series of dramatic drops. The canyon walls close in tight around the falls, amplifying the sound and funneling cool, mist-laden air that feels refreshing even on the hottest August days. The name comes from the American Dipper (or ouzel), a small gray bird that frequents the falls and can be seen diving underwater to feed on insects.
The trail is a well-maintained 1.6-mile round trip through mixed forest along the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River. Multiple viewpoints along the way offer different perspectives of the gorge and falls, including an overlook at the top, a bridge midway down, and a platform at the base. The trail is popular with locals and visitors alike, and the Ousel Falls Park is a community treasure.
The falls flow year-round and are particularly scenic after rain or during spring snowmelt from May through July. Winter transforms the canyon into an ice wonderland, and the trail remains accessible on snowshoes or microspikes. The trailhead is just minutes from the Town Center in Big Sky, making this an easy add-on to a ski trip or summer vacation.
Trail Information
Warning: Trail can be icy in winter — microspikes recommended. Canyon walls are steep — stay on trail. Bridge and viewing platforms can be slippery when wet.
