High Falls at Tettegouche
Lake County, Minnesota
About This Waterfall
High Falls at Tettegouche State Park is a powerful 60-foot cascade on the Baptism River, the highest waterfall entirely within the state of Minnesota (the taller Pigeon River falls straddle the Canadian border). The river pours over a ledge of dark basalt in a wide, powerful curtain before crashing into a deep pool at the base. The volcanic rock of the North Shore creates a dramatic, rugged setting, with the surrounding boreal forest of birch and spruce adding a wild, northern character.
The trail to High Falls is a 3-mile round trip from the main park entrance, following the Baptism River upstream through dense forest. The path is well-maintained with boardwalk sections, though there are some moderate grades and stairs near the falls. A sturdy viewing platform at the top of the falls provides dramatic views of the cascade and the gorge below. For a different perspective, a spur trail descends to a lower viewpoint, though the footing can be challenging.
Spring snowmelt in April and May produces the most thundering volume. Summer offers comfortable hiking and lush green forest. Fall foliage along the North Shore is among the finest in the Midwest, typically peaking in late September. The park also features Two Step Falls near the Lake Superior shoreline, a short distance from the campground. Tettegouche is one of the most popular state parks on the North Shore — arrive early on weekends.
