Gooseberry Falls
Lake County, Minnesota
About This Waterfall
Gooseberry Falls is a series of three powerful cascades — Upper, Middle, and Lower — that drop a combined 90 feet as the Gooseberry River thunders through a gorge of dark basalt on its final rush to Lake Superior. The falls are among the most visited natural attractions in Minnesota, and for good reason: the three-tiered cascade system is broad, powerful, and remarkably photogenic from multiple angles. The dark volcanic rock of the North Shore creates a striking contrast with the amber-brown water, which takes its color from tannins in the upstream wetlands.
The main falls are mere steps from the parking lot — a paved path leads under the US-61 bridge to viewing areas at both the Upper and Lower falls within minutes. For a longer exploration, over 18 miles of trails crisscross the park, including the River View Trail along the gorge rim and trails leading to the Lake Superior shoreline where the Gooseberry River meets the big lake. The terrain is generally easy to moderate, with stone steps and paved sections near the falls.
Spring snowmelt in April and May creates the most dramatic displays, when the river swells to a roaring torrent. Summer brings comfortable temperatures and easier access. Fall foliage along the North Shore is exceptional, typically peaking in late September. The park is the anchor of Minnesota's North Shore waterfall corridor along US-61 and makes an excellent base for exploring the region. Campgrounds fill early — reserve well in advance for summer and fall weekends.
