Tahquamenon Falls

About This Waterfall

Upper Tahquamenon Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, spanning nearly 200 feet across and dropping 50 feet over a ledge of Cambrian sandstone in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Tahquamenon River carries distinctive amber-brown water, colored by tannins from the cedar swamps upstream, creating a root-beer-like appearance that is unique among American waterfalls. The sheer volume of water — up to 50,000 gallons per second during spring runoff — generates a thundering roar and perpetual mist cloud that can be felt from the viewing platforms.

The Upper Falls are reached via a one-third-mile ADA-accessible paved path and boardwalk from the parking lot, making this one of the most accessible major waterfalls in the Midwest. Multiple viewing platforms provide different perspectives of the broad cascade. Four miles downstream, the Lower Falls consist of five smaller cascades tumbling around an island, accessible by a separate trail or by rowboat rental to the island. The park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres with 35+ miles of trails.

The falls are impressive year-round. Spring snowmelt creates the most powerful flow, often turning the river into a wall of amber water. Summer brings comfortable temperatures and the most visitors. Fall foliage in the UP is stunning, typically peaking in early October. Winter transforms the falls into a dramatic ice formation. The park offers multiple campgrounds. Plan to spend a full day exploring both the Upper and Lower Falls.
