Laughing Whitefish Falls

Laughing Whitefish Falls is a spectacular 100-foot fan-shaped cascade in the western Upper Peninsula, widely considered one of Michigan's most beautiful waterfalls. The Laughing Whitefish River spreads across a wide face of dark Jacobsville Sandstone, creating an elegant bridal-veil effect as the water fans out and tumbles down the layered cliff in dozens of individual streams. The surrounding gorge is lined with towering old-growth white pine and hemlock that tower above the falls, creating a primeval atmosphere. The unusual name comes from the Ojibwe word for the river.

The trail from the parking area is a well-maintained half-mile walk through a beautiful beech-maple forest, with the last section descending via wooden stairs and a viewing platform to the base of the falls. The total round trip is about a mile with roughly 108 feet of elevation gain — an easy hike suitable for most visitors. The viewing platform provides a stunning full-frontal view of the cascade, and the spray on warm days creates natural air conditioning.

Late spring through early summer offers the best water flow, as snowmelt in the UP can extend into May. Summer brings lush green forest and comfortable temperatures. Fall foliage in early October paints the surrounding canopy in brilliant colors. The falls are managed as a State Scenic Site with basic facilities (parking, outhouse) but no camping on-site. Nearby Munising offers lodging and serves as a gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
