Bond Falls
Ontonagon County, Michigan
About This Waterfall
Bond Falls is a 50-foot cascade on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula, where the river tumbles over a thick belt of fractured volcanic rock that divides the flow into dozens of individual streams and rivulets. The result is a wide, fan-shaped waterfall that looks different from every angle — from the boardwalk above, it's a chaotic mosaic of white water threading through dark basalt; from the base, it's a unified curtain of amber-tinted water with a thundering voice. Fall foliage season transforms Bond Falls into one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Midwest.
An accessible boardwalk with six viewing platforms extends from a picnic area atop the falls to the base, providing effortless access to multiple perspectives. The boardwalk crosses the river below the falls, allowing visitors to experience the cascade from both sides. The trail is short, well-maintained, and suitable for all abilities, making Bond Falls one of the most family-friendly waterfall experiences in the Upper Peninsula.
Fall foliage in early to mid-October is the prime season, when the surrounding hardwood forest of maple, birch, and aspen creates a spectacular backdrop of gold, orange, and red. Summer offers comfortable temperatures and consistent water flow. Spring brings the highest water volume. The scenic site is open roughly mid-May through mid-October for vehicle access, though the hiking trail is open year-round. Bond Falls is located near US-45, making it an easy stop on a western UP waterfall tour.
