Step Falls

Step Falls is a series of cascades, chutes, and pools that drop a total of 250 feet over smooth, water-polished granite in the Mahoosuc Range near Grafton Notch. The falls are spread across roughly a quarter mile of exposed bedrock, with the water fanning out across wide granite slabs before collecting in deep, jade-green pools perfect for swimming. Each "step" offers a different character — some are gentle slides, others are churning chutes, and several of the pools are deep enough for full immersion in the cold mountain water.

The trail is an easy 0.6-mile walk from the parking area on Bear River Road, following the brook uphill through mixed forest. The path is family-friendly and well-suited for children, with the lower pools easily accessible from the trail. As hikers continue upstream, each successive cascade and pool rewards the effort with increasingly scenic views. The wide granite slabs along the falls provide natural picnic spots and sunbathing areas during summer.

Summer is the prime season for swimming and sunbathing on the warm granite, though the water is always cold. Spring snowmelt produces the most dramatic cascades. Fall foliage in the Mahoosuc Range is spectacular, with the surrounding mountains providing a colorful backdrop. The preserve is managed by the Mahoosuc Land Trust and is free to visit. Step Falls is just a half mile from Grafton Notch State Park, making it easy to combine with other area attractions like Screw Auger Falls and Mother Walker Falls.
