Smalls Falls
Franklin County, Maine
About This Waterfall
Smalls Falls is a dramatic series of cascades and chutes dropping 54 feet through a narrow gorge of colorful metamorphic rock along the Sandy River near Rangeley. The layered rock formations display striking bands of green, grey, and rust-colored stone, carved into smooth channels and deep potholes by millennia of water action. The falls tumble through a tight slot canyon before spreading into inviting wading pools at the base, making it one of Maine's most accessible and family-friendly waterfall destinations.
The falls are located at the Maine DOT Smalls Falls Rest Area on Route 4, making access incredibly easy — a short trail of just a few hundred feet leads from the parking area to multiple vantage points along the gorge. Several spur paths follow the bedrock along the gorge rim, providing different perspectives of the cascades and pools below. The viewing areas are unfenced, so caution is needed, especially with children.
The falls are best visited in late spring through early fall when water flow is strong and temperatures invite wading. The rest area provides picnic tables, grills, and restroom facilities, making it an ideal lunch stop on the scenic drive between Farmington and Rangeley. Summer weekends can be busy, but the compact site rarely feels overcrowded. The gorge's colorful rock layers make for excellent photography in any light condition.
